After teasing for weeks in the recent past, today via a remote launching event, OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8 have been officially announced. At present, OnePlus has gained a respectable position as a flagship smartphone manufacturer as well as wearable IoT devices. Year-by-year, OnePlus has prooved the same by providing unique design, great screens, unique design, processor and camera performance, and battery life.
This will be a significant price increase compared to its predecessors. But the presence of 5G, premium features like a MEMC chip, 120Hz display, SD865, and even wireless charging, has finally taken the entire OnePlus 8 series out of the affordable price segment.
This will be a significant price increase compared to its predecessors. But the presence of 5G, premium features like a MEMC chip, 120Hz display, SD865, and even wireless charging, has finally taken the entire OnePlus 8 series out of the affordable price segment.
It is one of the most anticipated midsegment flagship smartphones of 2020. Oneplus 8 features top of the line hardware including the new Snapdragon 865 soc, 120 HZ display, great camera setup at the back, waterfall display edges and wireless charging – 1st to be featured by any OnePlus smartphone.
As we've noted, the OnePlus 8 is a more iterative take on its predecessor, the OnePlus 7T, but it includes enough improvements to make it a serious budget flagship handset - and in some ways, the new OnePlus phone has less competition given that the Samsung Galaxy S20 line doesn't have its own lower-priced equivalent.
These include the waterfall-style curved display edges, which used to be the provenance of the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro, leaving the cheapest models with a flat-screen. It protrudes a bit more than the camera housings on other phones, so a phone case that’s flush with the lenses would be a sensible purchase.
Coming to the selfie camera sensor, the OnePlus 8 lacks the panache that last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro / 7T Pro exhibited with their pop-up front-facing cameras. With this improvement, the OnePlus 8 is a bit more robust for not having those moving parts.
The OnePlus 8 has a volume rocker on the left side and a lock button on the right; both stick out farther than on last year’s OnePlus phones, and offer a more satisfying ‘click’ sensation to boot. The brand’s signature silence slider, located above the lock button on the right side, likewise has a more tactile feel when switching between ring, vibrate, and silent modes.
As phones get ever heavier, the OnePlus 8’s 180g feels well-balanced - the only 2020 flagship that’s noticeably lighter is the 163g Samsung Galaxy S20, which is also smaller. Most others are heftier by degrees, like the 186g Galaxy S20 Plus and 196g Galaxy Note 10 Plus, all the way up to the 226g iPhone 11 Pro Max
This year OnePlus has made the display of a new one plus 8 series as one of the highlights. Last year the OnePlus 7 Pro got an excellent rating from DisplayMate and, unsurprisingly, the new OnePlus 8 series also gets the same rating this year!
The one plus 8 Pro model comes with a 6.78-inch AMOLED Fluid display made by Samsung with 2K 3168 x 1440p resolution, 120Hz high screen refresh rate (with 240Hz touch sampling rate), and HDR10 + support. OnePlus 8 Pro also features a new MEMC chip to enhance video and gaming at a higher frame rate. The standard OnePlus 8 features a smooth 6.55-inch AMOLED display with FHD + 2400 x 1080p resolution, 90Hz screen refresh rate, 1100 nits maximum brightness, and HDR10 +. Both AMOLED panels on the phone are JNCD ~ 0.4 rated, which means it is extremely color-accurate.
Both the smartphones i.e. One Plus 8 and Pro come with the flagship Snapdragon 865 processor with Qualcomm's X55 modem. This means that both will have support for the new era 5G network.
Under the hood, both models feature 128GB and 256GB UFS 3.0 (confirmed) ROM options. However, when it comes to RAM, the OnePlus 8 will feature the LPDDR4X standard with 8GB and 12GB RAM variants, while the Pro variant has the new LPDDR5 standard with the same RAM options.
OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro have stereo speakers and support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX audio. The phone also features a new haptic vibration 2.0 that is better than its predecessor. Both phones will run Android 10 from the factory, with the new version of OxygenOS and Dark Mode 2.0, which adds support for more applications.
The OnePlus 8 Pro presents a significantly better camera setup this year. The company has unveiled two high-resolution cameras in the Pro variant, one of which is the new Sony IMX689 48MP sensor, the same from the OPPO Find X2 series.
The second 48MP lens is the IMX586 for excellent wide-angle shots, including wide-angle night shots. In fact, the OnePlus CEO has already shared a couple of ultra-wide-angle night camera samples from the Pro's camera today and they looked pretty good. OnePlus 8 Pro also adds a special color filter sensor that allows you to play around with color filters on your camera samples.
48MP Sony IMX689 sensor with f / 1.78 (OIS + EIS)
48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with f / 2.2 and 120-degree FOV
8MP telephoto lens with f / 2.4: 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom (OIS)
5MP color filter sensor with f / 2.4
AF laser and dual-LED flash
OnePlus claims that the 8 Pro features even better HDR technology than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The Pro model also comes with Hybrid Image Stabilization (OIS + EIS) and 3 microphones that support audio zoom.
As for OnePlus 8, you'll get a standard triple camera setup like its predecessor. You also get the same Hybrid OIS + EIS technology for stabilization.
Both models support a maximum 4K 60fps video recording resolution.
As for the front camera, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will have a 16MP selfie shooter with f / 2.0 and f / 2.4 perforations respectively.
The two new OnePlus models are increasing battery capacity this year. This is a much-needed update given its support for 5G and higher refresh rate displays.
The OnePlus 8 has a 4300 mAh battery with Warp Charge 30T fast charging with 30W.
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a 4510 mAh battery with a "30Watt" fast charge and 30 W Warp Charge 30 Wireless. You can go from 3% to 55% in just 30 minutes of wireless charging. The phone is likely to support 3W reverse wireless charging as well.
OnePlus has increased the price of the new OnePlus 8 series. The OnePlus 8 starts at $ 699 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB variant with the 12GB and 256GB model at a price of $ 799. As for the OnePlus 8 Pro, it starts at $ 899 for the 8GB + 128GB model and goes up to $ 999 for the 12GB + 256GB variant.
In the United States, the OnePlus 8 series will also be sold by Verizon for the first time. Open sales will begin in North America beginning April 29. In Europe, pre-orders will start on April 14 and open sales will start on April 21.
The OnePlus 8 sets the high bar for budget flagships in 2020. While its design refinements borrow elements from other flagships, it's an undoubtedly stylish phone, with cascading screen edges and a perforated hole for the front camera.
Pros:
Cons:
With a Snapdragon 865 and up to 12GB of RAM, the phone has high performance despite the fact that it costs much less than most flagships, making it the cheapest 5G phone in many markets.
